Translation and Publication of Russian Monograph entitled The Movement of Acoustic Energy in the Ocean

Abstract

The objectives of the project are to manage the translation and publication of a scientific monograph in the field of vector acousti cs. The monograph, written by a Russian expert in the field, provides a review of vector acoustics and sensing. The finished monogra ph would inform/benefit the community of researchers in the area of underwater acoustics, an important area of naval relevance since acoustic sensing is the primary mode of detection within the ocean.Professor Vladimir Shchurov has worked in the field of ocean aco ustics for more than four decades and authored more than 150 research articles in Russian and international journals and has partici pated in international conferences. This monograph builds upon the content of three earlier monographs Vector acoustics of the oc ean (2003, in Russian), Vector acoustics of the ocean (2006), Ocean Acoustics (2010, in Chinese). The author is so highly respe cted in the field that the knowledge of this book has led to the interest by researchers in accessing an English Language translatio n.The Australia Acoustical Society (AAS) is in a unique position in a number of respects. The AAS publications has strong links wit h Springer publishing, which publishes the journal Acoustics Australia, and Springer have accepted to publish the translated version . The AAS has experts in Underwater Acoustics who have had research collaboration with Prof Shchurov and who are fluent in both Eng lish and Russian. A professional translation company, based in Australia, has a translator who has undertaken studies in the field o f underwater acoustics and so is well qualified to provide a top quality translation. The original images have been provided by the author and Professor Alexander Gavrilov (fluent in English and Russian) has undertaken to check the images for consistency with the text. He will also undertake a thorough review of the compiled text, equations and images before the manuscript is submitted to Sp ringer for publication. The outcome will be a high quality publication by Springer of a monograph that will be a valuable reference t o those working in underwater acoustics research in ONR with topics including vector representation of an acoustic field, theory and technique of vector-phase underwater acoustic measurements, phenomenon of compensation for the intensity of energy counter currents , vortices of the acoustic intensity vector in a shallow sea waveguide, examination of a weak signal in a diffuse partially coherent and coherent acoustic noise field, vector-phase experimental techniques.
