US Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium

Abstract

00,Technical and Scientific Objectives: The US-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine program brings together outstandi,ng young scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from the United States and 54 African countries for a symposium to discuss, exciting advances and opportunities in their fields. The first symposium will be hosted by the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) an,d the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) in late 2022. The symposium has three objectives: (1) Enhanc,e scientific dialogue and exchange among young researchers in Africa and the United States; (2) Encourage and strengthen scientific, collaboration and the transfer of techniques and approaches across disciplines within and beyond the continent; and (3) Empower youn,g researchers to assume leadership roles. The symposium will focus on advances in artificial intelligence, material sciences and nan, ellectually stimulating and generates a dialogue across disciplines considered as key for scientific innovation. These exchanges on,cutting-edge scientific knowledge among U.S. and African attendees take place through five plenary sessions covering a wide range of, disciplines; poster presentations by each attendee; educational exhibits, and informal discussions throughout the event. Following, the symposium, US-Africa Frontiers fellowships (travel seed grants) are awarded to pairs or groups of attendees who intend to collab, orate on a research topic of common interest.Relevance to the US Naval Science and Technology Plan: Through the US-African Frontiers, Symposium, the Navy will tap into a wide network of highly qualified early to mid-career researchers and identify top talent from t,aterial sciences, nanotechnology and artificial intelligence. Session topics align with Navy framework priority areas of Operational, Endurance and Sensing & Sense-Making. The US-African Frontiers also builds on ONRG support of the 10th International Conference of,the African Materials Research Society (AMRS2019).Department of Defense Relevance: This program aligns well with the 2020 DoD Intern, ational Science and Technology Engagement Strategy by leveraging global technological research and development and connecting DoD re,searchers and employees to leading young researchers on the African continent. The US-African Frontiers Symposium provides a platfor,m for assessing worthwhile collaborations with researchers in DoD relevant fields, strengthening existing, as well as establishing n,ew worthwhile partnerships with the rapidly developing and expanding scientific community of Africa. This initiative will allow the,DoD to leverage others investments to enhance its defense capabilities in cooperation with Americas allies and stay at the forefro,nt of S&T for defense and national securitySelected Invited Speakers/Distinguished GuestsUnited States: Dr. Sossina Haile (Northwes, tern University) Dr. Jim Scott (Colby College) Dr. Tanya Berger-Wolf (Ohio State University). Dr. Chibueze Amanchukwu (Universit,y of Chicago) Dr. Deji Akiwande (University of Texas, Austin) Dr. Asmeret Behre ( University of California Merced)Additional US re,searchers are currently being nominated to the organizing committee by the NASEM membership. AfricaOn the African side, NASEM will w,ork closely with the African Academy of Sciences to identify diverse early-career researchers to serve as session co-chairs and orga, nizers; they will be selected from the AAS network of fellows and Next Einstein Fellows, as well as current and former Partnerships, for Enhanced Engagement in Research (PEER) grantees.
