International Congress for Neuroethology in Lisbon, Portugal
Abstract
The 15th International Congress of Neuroethology (ICN) will be held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Conference in Lisbon, Port, ugal, July 24-29, 2022 with an expected 400-500 participants. The ICN is the official meeting of the International Society for Neuro, ethology (ISN). Neuroethology is a fertile multidisciplinary field of neuroscience, focused on the neural mechanisms underlying natu, ral behavior. Research in neuroethology seeks to bridge neural mechanisms and behavior in the context of evolutionary processes. The, complexity of this task can only be achieved by combining different levels of analysis, spanning from molecular, genetic to computa, tional, across invertebrate and vertebrate species. The emphasis on comparing behavioral adaptations and neural mechanisms across sp,ecies allows neuroethologists to investigate the relationship between brain and behavior in a manner that takes advantage of the nat, ural solutions to biological problems. The comparative approach facilitatesthe identification of common principles of brain organiza, tion as well as detecting mechanisms that enhance behavioral performance, which can then be implemented computationally or technolog, ically. The inclusive scientific nature of neuroethology provides a unique opportunity for cross-fertilization among different resea, rch approaches that in large conferences remain in separate realms. In addition, neuroethology is an ideal discipline for identifyin,g animal models that, because of their specializations, may be the basis of future scientific breakthroughs.
