Extending the CapoCaccia Workshops towards Neuromorphic Intelligence
Abstract
The annual series of #CapoCaccia Workshops toward Neuromorphic Intelligence# was established in 2007 to promote the neuromorphic engineering approach for developingneuro-technologies and intelligent neuralprocessing system, and to support the growth of the international community working in this domain. The workshop web-site is located at: http://capocaccia.cc/Neuromorphic engineering originates from the seminal work of Carver Mead and Misha Mahowald at Caltech in the mid nineties, on building brain-inspired models of neuralcomputation using standard VLSI CMOS technologies. The field has since grown and expanded to include work on emerging memory technologies, large-scale custom spiking neural network chips for high-performancecomputing, and theories of plasticity, learning, and artificial (and natural) intelligence. The neuromorphic approach is by now also being adopted by large corporations, such as Samsung, Huawei, Intel, and IBM; as well as by multiple government fundingagencies, asa potential way of building Artificial Intelligence (AI)computing technologies that can overcome some of the limitations and critical issues found in standardcomputing technologies and deep learning systems. The CapoCaccia Workshops technical and scientific objectives are to fulfill these goals by creating synergies between neuromorphic engineering, computationalneuroscience, developmental biology, device physics, and AI/machine learning experts. This will generate a new interdisciplinary community of experts in #neuromorphic intelligence#, who will have the broad set of competences for understanding how todeveloping a new generation of brain-inspired computing technologies that can overcome the limitations of classical computing approaches and systems.
