NICOP - Smart Composite Biofilms for Adaptive Camouflage

Abstract

Smart textiles can provide significant benefits in a defensive context as they enable the user to adapt to variousenvironments, providing a significant performance advantage and enhanced survivability. Despite this, highperformance applications of smart textiles remain significantly limited however. This is due to challenges in stablyincorporating sense, conduction and responsive elements into textiles without compromising material performanceand user comfort. We are proposing the development of a novel, smart, biobased and bioinspired textile based onnanocellulose biofilms for adaptive camouflage. This project will investigate the most promising existing andemerging chromic sense/response systems, including synthetic and natural protein-based systems. Utilizing thenatural properties of bacterial nanocellulose biofilms, these novel approaches will be tested for improved strengthof response, stability and durability and then will be combined in novel formulations to achieve an enhancedeffect.
