Conference support for the 15th Metabolic Engineering Conference (ME15)
Abstract
The Metabolic Engineering Conference is the world-leading conference to share premium developments and achievements in the field. From June 11 to 15 2023,we will host the 15th Metabolic Engineering Conference in Singapore at Marina Bay Sands, with the theme of #Metabolic Engineering for a Sustainable Bioeconomy#. As Singapore is a regional synthetic biology hub, we expect the local metabolic engineering community to deliver a highly successful event and a unique meeting experience through the 15th Metabolic Engineering Conference. Given our shared interest with the Department of Defense (DoD) in synthetic biology and its support through the years, we would like to seek conference support from the DoD for the event. We believe the synergy amongst world-leading scientists at the conference will inspire innovation and accelerate advances in metabolic engineering, includingareas such as biomaterials, biomanufacturing, biosensing, and microbial energy # all of which are research foci of the DoD.The shared vision of Singapore#s metabolic engineering community is to advance metabolic engineering, consolidate research capabilities, and harness synergies across industry sectorsto create a vibrant and globally connected bio-based economy in the Republic. The local community has made a concerted effort to encourage frequent interactions and co-development between industry, universities, and research institutes#augmenting talent development and deployment for the new bio-economy and catalyzing the translation of expertise in metabolic engineering for industry applications. Thanks to steady investments from the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF) in metabolic engineering and synthetic biology-related R&D through the years, Singapore#s metabolic engineering community currently possesses internationally leading research capabilities and actively contributes to the international metabolic engineering community through collaboration and partnerships with industry, research institutes, and universities worldwide. To foster relationships with international peers, Singapore continues to host several of the world#s most prestigious association conventions and corporate events. In 2017, the country was ranked as the Top International Meeting City for 10 consecutive years by the Union of International Associations (UIA). TheInternational Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) also ranked Singapore as the Top Convention City in Asia-Pacific for 16 consecutive years in 2017. In a more relevant example, the 7th International Meeting on Synthetic Biology#also chaired by Matthew Chang#was held in Singapore in 2017 with more than 900 participants from over 40 countries. Building on its success, Singapore will host the 15th Metabolic Engineering Conference. This is the flagship conference in metabolic engineering and will showcase the discipline#s latest advances. Notably,it will feature talks by renowned scientists in the field, including Sang Yup Lee,Michael Koepke, and Kristala Prather, and is expected to attract 500 attendees from academia, industry, and the government. Around 200 poster presentations are anticipated, and conference proceedings, special journal issues, and researcharticles are part of the expected outputs of the conference. With its potential to deliver sustainable solutions, the global bioeconomy represents a rapidly growing segment of the world economy driven by climate change and the future use of carbon taxation and global emissions trading systems. Through the 15th Metabolic Engineering Conference, Singapore will significantly contribute to the advancement of metabolic engineering for a sustainable bioeconomy.
