Funding towards International Conference GRAPHENE2023 and pre-conference 2D Materials Study Day for Early Career researchers

Abstract

The chain of two events (held in the University of Manchester UK, 26-30 June 2023) - annual international conference GRAPHENE2023 and the pre-conference #2D Materials Study Day# for early-career researchers are among the key materials science events in Europe in 2023. Two-dimensional materials (2DM) are atomically thin layers of chemically stable compounds, which - in their bulk three-dimensional form - exist as van der Waals layered crystals. Nowadays, the family of 2DM contains hundreds of compounds (graphene was the first, produced in 2004), which - collectively - represent all known properties of solid state materials, and those can be combined into even larger variety of heterostructures with multifunctional properties. Research in 2DM is the fastest growing field of inorganic materials research worldwide, ranging from fundamental discoveries of new compounds and new physical phenomena to development of 2DM applications ranging from sensing and high-performance optoelectronics tohigh-performance composites, hydrogen isotopes separation, water decontamination and desalination. The two multidisciplinary events provide the platform for academic and industry researchers to collaborate on 2DM chemistry & growth, 2DM spectroscopic characterization, functionalization for biosensors, 2DM applications in health, 2DM-based composites, coatings, foams and membranes, devices for low-power-consuming electronics and optoelectronics (flexible displays, high frequency devices, sensors). Several mini-symposia address the emerging subfields of 2DM research: ferroelectric & piezoelectric 2DM; 2DM integration into photonic & plasmonic circuits; properties & applications of MXenes; quantum transport, magnetism and spintronics; topological and exotic physics in van der Waals heterostructures; 2D water and nanofluidics in 2DM-based channels. These symposia are designed to accelerate academic exchanges and to help early-career researchers to join and kick-start their own work on themost exciting topics of advanced materials science and applications.
