Caribbean Conference on Functional Materials Caribmat 2023

Abstract

The 3rd Caribbean Conference on Functional Materials, CARIBMAT 2023, aims to promote interaction and collaboration among researchers in the field of functional materials in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, the United States and also collaborations with other Latin American and European countries, in an effort to promote opportunities for exploration, discussion and knowledge-building within the Functional Materials community. Two previous Caribmat conferences were held in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) in 2016 and Cartagena de Indias (Colombia) in 2018. The 3rd Caribmat, planned for 2020 was postponed to 2023 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Caribmat conferences have been organized by members of the Physics of Electronic Nanomaterials (Física de Nanomateriales Electronicos, acronym FINE) research group from the Materials Physics Department of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. In previous Caribmat meetings, contributions on different topics have been presented and discussed, showing advances of interest in state of the art in fields such as the synthesis of nanostructures by effective low-cost methods and by green chemistry, accurate control of size and shape of nanostructures or catalytic activity of different materials. Also, advances in the properties of perovskites and carbon nanostructures were reported. In general, advances in some of these fields have been achieved in the frame of cooperation started in Caribmat meetings, which have enabled access, mainly of Latin American Ph.D. students, to experimental techniques in the partner s laboratories. Interactions during previous Caribmat meetings have led to research collaborations involving synergistic activities such as visiting scientist engagements, short stays, and overall research collaborations. This meeting (www.caribmat.org) will likely contribute towards a strengthening of the already existing cooperations among researchers in Latin America, USA and Europe while also giving rise to new ones. The conference topics match some areas of research on functional materials in the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, mainly on synthesis, characterization and physical and chemical properties of materials in the nano and microscale. Two of theinvited speakers to Caribmat 2023, Diogenes Placencia and Jake Fontana are researchers of the Naval Research Laboratory. Dorcas Torres (Interamerican University of Puerto Rico) and Diógenes Placencia are members of the organizing and scientific committees of the conference. Ernesto Marinero, of Purdue University, is a member of the scientific Committee and will give a talk as invited speaker.Other invited speakers from the U.S. are Miguel Yacamán of Northern Arizona University and Gerardo Morell of University of Puerto Rico.Based on data from past conferences, the estimated number of participants in Caribmat 23 is expected in the range of 70-80 researchers of Latin America (mainly the Caribbean region), USA and Europe. The four-day programme includes sessions with invited talks and oral presentations as well as a long poster session. Also an ONRG Scientific Director will address the attendees in a plenary arrangement to describe the ONRG funding mechanisms. The abstracts of all presentations will be published in the digital journal Materials and Devices.
