Week long workshop in Ushuaia that will include scientific talks, round table discussions and keynote talks aimed at improving the existing Space Weather research capabilities in Argentina.

Abstract

Space Weather (SW) is a prime example of a field that requires strategic thinking and open collaboration between scientists, engineers, technologists, operators and policy makers in order to succeed. If we take the U.S. National Space Weather Program definition of Space Weather at face value, it would be impractical and almost prohibitively expensive for one institution alone to be able to master all expertise required to address the #conditions on the Sun, the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere and thermosphere that can influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems and endanger human life#. For these reasons, a week-long event which includes scientific talks, round table discussions and keynote talks aimed at increasing and improving the existing research capabilities of SW in Argentina is proposed. Specifically, the workshop#s goal is to further developingpartnerships between research institutions in the U.S. and Argentina to strengthen the scientific collaboration focused on understanding the geospace response to Sun-Earth environment. This effort will aim to involve all Argentine institutions that have programs related to SW and are eager to form a consortium. The workshop includes the following activities:1- Scientific talks describing the state of art in Space Weather basic research. 2- A series of keynote seminars on SW forecasting tutorials mostly aimed to student and future operators based on the yearly school organized by the SW Laboratory at GSFC.3- Institutional talks including participant#scurrent activities, future plans and expectations on the collaboration with the U. S.
