Novel studies on optics and wave physics

Abstract

This is an interdisciplinary proposal that addresses frontier trends in optics, photonics, acoustics, and wave physics in general. The areas of study include singular optics, optical angular momentum, topological photonics, plasmonics, metamaterials, geometric (Berry) phases, quantum weak measurements, and others. Importantly, numerous phenomena that appear in these areas have fundamental origins that are universal for different types of waves. Therefore, the ideas and achievements for one type of waves can be successfully applied to other types of waves; this is fruitful and often initiates new directions of research. This project will develop novel methods, concepts, and unveil intriguing topological phenomena in the physics of wave systems with nontrivial structure and internaldegrees of freedom. This will provide a deeper insight into properties of complex optical, acoustic, and quantum fields, and new avenues for fine control of diverse wave, matter, and mixed wave-matter systems.
