Support for the 36th European Conference on Surface Science, 28 Aug - 1 Sep 2023, Lodz, Poland
Abstract
The European Conference on Surface Science (ECOSS) is one of the largest international conferences directed jointly by the Surface Science Division of the International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications (IUVSTA) and the Surface and Interface Section of the European Physical Society (EPS), which since the 1978 has been gathering annually nearly 500 representatives of physical, chemical, material and biological sciences. The scope of conference is the study of surfaces. The prestige of the event is supported by invited speakers who are outstanding people of science. In the next edition, one of the leading speakers will be, for example, Prof. Klaus von Klitzing # winner of the Nobel Prize in physics in 1985.Important subjects discussed during ECOSS are related to surface preparation of materials for sustainable growth. In particular, research concerns photovoltaics, energy storage, catalysis and drinking water treatment. A prime example is the research conducted by Yury Gogotsi, one of the leading speakers at the upcoming ECOSS-36 conference. Professor Gogotsi is world class leader in the field of supercapacitors, the use of which in the automotive industry will allow a significant reduction in fuel consumption. His research is also related to desalination of seawater, which can solve the world s problems with access to drinking water. Other extremely important topics discussed during the conference are hydrogen production, its storage and greenhouse gases capture through catalysis processes carried out on the surface of functional materials. One of the topics of the conference will also be the research on two-dimensional materials, which has been developing in recent years, which is an extreme example of the role of surfaces in defining the properties of materials. Scientist will also discuss progress in development in field of silicon-based quantum computation and molecular electronics. All discussed topics during ECOSS are seen as one of the most important challenges of the coming decades. Conference will also bring together scientists working in different fields of science and therefore will become excellent platform not only to discuss scientific problems but also to start new international collaborations. The event will be also important for young researchers who will have opportunity to discuss their results with recognized scientists, experts in the field. It is also important that students will have chance to take part in two schools # one is organized just before and other during ECOSS. This year ECOSS will also host 15 mini-symposia (MS)# which are short sessions related to trendy topics of surface science. The underlying idea of MS is to encourage the diversity of speakers and of the scientific topics through granting its organization to a specialist in the field. The ECOSS-36 conference will be organized in Lodz between 28th of August and 1st September 2023 by the University of Lodz. This year conference will be divided to up to 7 parallel sessions with approx. 350-400 oral talks and over 100 posters presented during two poster sessions. The topics covered by ECOSS have direct relevance to the Naval Research Enterprise (NRE) focus areas of Advanced Materials, Microelectronics and Quantum Science, as well as connections to several other of the 14 focus areas (including e.g., Biotechnology, Renewable Energy Generation and Storage, Advanced Computing and Software). ONR Global funding will be used only toward a portion the rental costs for the venue hosting the conference, the Vienna House Andel#s Hotel and a portion the travel expenses for plenary lecturers from Europe and Australia. Which will help toensure optimal conditions for foster the exchange of knowledge and ideas pertinent to surface sciences, which are key knowledge areas supporting the Navy#s 14 focus areas.
