Support for the Australian Space Research Conference
Abstract
This proposal is to provide support for the 21st Australian Space Research Conference (ASRC) whichwill be held in Hobart, Australia, from 25-27 September 2023. This will be the 15th ASRC jointlysponsored and organised by the Australian Academy of Science#s National Committee for Space andRadio Science (NCSRS) and the National Space Society of Australia (NSSA), with the support of theMars Society of Australia (MSA).The ASRC is the primary annual meeting for Australian space research. It welcomes researchers, engineers, educators, business and policy, and other workers from across the university, industry andgovernment parts of the space sector, and is not limited to Australian-based research.Australia faces challenges in meeting the workforce skills needs for the space sector. This is thepremier meeting for space researchers (science, engineering, technologists, practitioners) in Australia. As such it is very important for fostering and maintaining the growth and future of the Australianspace sector by providing a forum for information exchange, community networking, and studentpathways. It is also an important mechanism for retaining active researchers in this field withinAustralia. The ASRC has a strong commitment to equity and diversity and particularly encourages sponsorshipand support which can help grow the skills base. The proposal is for the ONR-Global to support the ASRC to help keep the registration fees down to areasonable level. Last year the daily cost per registrant was about $AUD300. The student registrationfee at $AUD135 was heavily subsidised bythe other registrants. This is in line with the ethos of theconference to foster students in space research. Financial support fromONRG in the form of a grantwill ensure that registration fees are maintained at affordable levels and the conference can proceedandbe a success. An ONRG grant will be used to cover the fixed expenses of Audio/visual equipment hire from thevenue including microphones, laptops and projectors, venue hall hire fees, and aiding in deferringcosts for special invited speakers.
