SCIENTIFIC MEETING IN LA PAZ, BOLIVIA

Abstract

The Laboratory for Atmospheric Physics (LFA) of the University Mayor de San Andres (UMSA) at La Paz, Bolivia, is hosting an international scientific meeting in atmospheric sciences. Scientists from Latin America as well as from Europe and the US will participate in the event (including officials from the World Meteorological Organization). One of the main goals of this meeting is to discuss ways to expand systematic atmospheric observations in the region, especially in light of the successful establishment of the Chacaltaya GAW station (Bolivia) which was recently designated as a Global Observatory. The station has been operating almost uninterruptedly for the past 12 years monitoring the atmospheric composition of the Central Andes. It is operated by the LFA-UMSA with the supportof an international consortium through a horizontal collaboration scheme. This model has proved effective and could be used as a model for other stations in the region. This topic will also be discussed at the meeting. Finally, an important part of the event willbe devoted to discussing the scientific challenges that lie ahead for the region, including cloud formation, the influence of largecities on quasi-pristine environments, aerosol-glacier interaction, and the implementation and validation of numerical weather and chemical models.
