CSP International Conference Frontiers of Matter Wave Optics (FOMO 2024)

Abstract

In 2024, we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the discovery of matter waves by de Broglie, which is quietly seen as the starting point of modern Physics. De Broglie#s ideas triggered a chain of events which would lead to Bohr atom, the Heisenberg equation, and quantum mechanics as a whole. The conference on the frontiers of matter wave optics (FOMO) will celebrate this achievement in September 9-13, 2024, in Crete. Back in 2012, the European leaders in Matter Wave Optics and Matterwave Interferometry realized that there was a great lack of communication between the top research in the field. It was therefore decided to start a conference series on this topic, which very quickly became an international focus in the field. Past speakers include researchers, who would later receive the Nobel Price, including Anton Zeilinger and Alain Aspect. The main aim of the conference is to take stock of the latest development in a field that is advancing extremely rapidly. Great emphasis will be placed on the interaction between the participants of the conference. In the past, this has been crucial in forming many new collaborations resulting in the number of scientific breakthroughs. This year#s conference will focus on topics, such as quantum sensing, the measurement of fundamental constants using matter wave interferometry, gravitational-wave sensing using large-scale atom interferometry, guided matter waves and atomtronics. We expect about 200 participants. We plan to achieve a distribution of participants, which is balanced in gender and geographically, with participants coming from as far as Japan, the USA, and Australia, and as close as Greece, Cyprus and Israel. We will encourage participation from former eastern European countries, as well as providing some scholarships for researcher from less favored regions. This conference grant would enable us to broaden the scope of the conference participation, and at the same time allow us to attract additional excellent speakers.
