International AI Captain Demonstration
Abstract
As the business for autonomous vessels develops, AI trustworthiness prediction has become more crucial than ever before to reduce maritime accidents and improve safety in live maritime environments. However, today autonomous vessels are not allowed to merely throw off the moorings and let the unmanned vessel #do its thing#. This concept sits very poorly with harbor masters on the grounds of public safety. Achieving system trustworthiness prior to live testing may be achievable in a synthetic environment. Although not fully proven, the establishment of a simulation based test capability will radically alter the path of systems as they are introduced tothe real world. The 2nd International AI Captain Workshop seeks to explore the concept of a virtual environment for AI trustworthiness testing, experiment with the emerging synthetic framework, and accomplish value-added scientific data acquisition. The event consists of 3 phases: Workshop, Synthetic Framework Roll-out, and Experimentation within the Framework.During the workshop day, participants from US government warfare centers, industry partners, and academics will interact to critique the current interaction standards and discuss extensions that will further refine the science of distributed modeling & simulation.Empowering the community#s ability to accomplish value-added scientific data collection is the infrastructure of the synthetic environment. Preliminary assessment ofthe distributed simulation methods were evaluated in the 1st International AI Captain Workshop held in September 2022. That event identified shortcomings that had to be corrected to empower future experimentation. And, led to the procurement of a dedicated autonomous engine. Day 2 of the 2024 event will focus on delivery of the recommended changes, introduction of the autonomous engine, and dissemination of #how to integrate# information to the participating experimenters and observers.Day 3 will focus on - first of its kind - experimentation with a virtual experiment of #COLREGs requirement compliance# with autonomous hardware-in-the-loop. COLREGs orCollision Regulations govern ships at sea when they are within proximity of one another. The Day 3 experiment will gather data on arecently procured autonomy to explore its current status and provide #first-look# data on a real world autonomy driven by a synthetic environment. Data from this experiment will be used to study the concept of #Trusted AI# and the use of simulation to achieve it.Additional data regarding the modeling of electromagnetic emissions in the sim environment will be used to build future experiments.
