CSP - Budget Support for the 15th International Marine Design Conference (IMDC 2024)

Abstract

1.Technical descriptionThe 15th International Marine Design Conference (IMDC 2024) is organized by the Department of Maritime and Transport Technology, Delft University of Technology, and is hosted by the Netherlands Defence Materiel Organisation at the Marine Etablissement Amsterdam (MEA). The aim of the IMDC is to promote all aspects of marine design as an engineering discipline. IMDC 2024 includes four days of presentations and is scheduled for June 2-6, 2024. This triennial conference regularly receives contributions from academia, public, and private sector marine researchers.IMDC 2024 is one of the preeminent ship design conferences, and one that is specifically focused on marine design as an engineering discipline. The program consists of research contributions from academia, public and private industry in all aspects related to marine design. The program consists of four days of presentations in three parallel tracks. Every presentation is accompanied by a peer-reviewed open-access paper published with an associated DOI, and indexed in the scientific databases. All contributions are peer-reviewed by both the international scientific and local organizing committee. Additional plenary talks will also be provided, one of which will be specifically on naval ship design. The scientific program is relevant to various ONR Global Research Tech Domains (see IMDC 2024 scientific topics listed below). As of the close of the abstract window, we have received over 135 abstracts from over 20 countries, of which 58 are student paper abstracts. We expect about 175 attendees.2.Naval and Scientific SignificanceIMDC 2024 is hosted is hosted by the Netherlands Defence Materiel Organisation (recently renamed Dutch Command Materiel and IT (COMMIT) agency) at the Marine Etablissement Amsterdam (MEA) (the Navy Yard in Amsterdam). IMDC also has regular contributions or support from the US Office of Naval Research (Kelly Cooper is on the International Committee),the UK Ministry of Defense, and Netherlands naval public and private industry. Numerous submitted abstracts are directly focused onthe design and design process of naval vessels. Among the topics presented at IMDC, several are of particular naval significance, including:-Ship design methodology such as: systems engineering, set-based design, design optimization, concurrent design, modular design, configuration based design, or #fuzzy# design aspects. -Novel marine design concepts, such as: hull form design, naval vessels, or specialized and complex vessels. -Influence of energy transition on maritime design, including both zero emission and high power and energy systems.-Influence of unmanned and autonomous transition on maritime design.-Influence of digital transition on maritime design, such as: digital shadows and twins, model-based systems engineering, AI, ML and big data. -Fleet and transportation systems design-Maritime design education3.Desired outcomesAll technical contributions will be presented to the conference, including keynotes. In addition to the in-person conference, all technical presentations will include a scientific paper which will be published open access via TU Delft OPEN Publishing in an open access book. All papers will have an assigned DOI, the book will have an ISBN, andwill be indexed on the scientific databases. In conclusion, the main excepted outcomes of IMDC 2024 are:-Networking of researchers in the field of marine design, including academics, students, and practitioners in industry-Establish and discussing the state-of-the-art in marine design -An open-access book of the conference proceedings published by TU Delft OPEN Publishing
