The Singapore AUV Challenge 2024 and The OCEANS 2024 Singapore

Abstract

The Singapore AUV Challenge (SAUVC) 2024The Singapore Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Challenge, dubbed as SAUVC, is being jointly organized by Acoustic Research Laboratory of Tropical Marine Science Institute in National University of Singapore (NUS) in collaboration with the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society Singapore Chapter and the Singapore Polytechnic. This is an outreach programme to engage and expose the tertiary students to the challenges of AUV design. The SAUVC was started in 2013 and was originally intended to create awareness among the local students on the importance of underwater robotics and its relevance to Singapore. However, it grew into an international competition from its very inception as it was felt that opening up the competition at an international level would add diversity to the design approaches. Thus students across the world get to learn from each other how they have tackled the same problem but using different technologies and approaches. It also helped tofoster greater relationships between the international students. The level of participation by the students have gone up tremendously over the years with the last two years seeing more than 300 international students from 15 different countries fielding 25 to 32 teams in person, and teams from more than 20 countries participating in the initial video submission round. The 2022 edition of the event was endorsed by the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences. The 2024 edition of the event will be held from 5-8 April 2024, and we have applied for UN Decade endorsement. We are expecting more than 300 international students from different countries fielding about 35 teams to participate in SAUVC 2024. There is no registration fee charged to the students for this event to engage as many students as possible, especially from developing and under developedcountries. There will be interactive sessions with the students as well as a prize presentation ceremony at the end of the competition during a Gala dinner. It is co-sponsored by the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) and the Marine Technology Society (MTS). OCEANS 2024 Singapore is scheduled for 15-18 April 2024 at the Sands Expo Convention Centre, Marina Bay Sands. Aligned with the theme of the conference, "Climate Resilience, Coastal Protection, and a Sustainable Ocean," we aim to spotlight noteworthy presentations in the realm of smart marine technologies. The conference is expected to attract approximately 700 delegates and about 400 professionally reviewed research papers discussing problems ranging from underwater communications in challenging environments, acoustic propagation in littoral waters to field marine robotics. About 20% of the abstracts received are in the field of Ocean Vehicles and 7% specifically in the field of Field Robotics coveringa large base on applications of autonomous underwater vehicles. There will be 2 to 3 plenaries, an equal number of panel sessions and 4 tutorials on special interest topics. About 50 exhibitors are expected to showcase their state-of-the-art solutions/products todelegates. Visits to exhibits are free of charge. Technical tours are also being organised to showcase research facilities like deep sea test facility at the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine Systems (TCOMS) and the St Johns Island National Marine Laboratories. A Student Poster Competition (SPC) will be organized to encourage research students to showcase the outcome of their researchduring the conference. The conference provides support for the travel, accommodation, and conference registration expenses of the selected students. The top three p
