US UK Synbio Showcase Workshop
Abstract
The US-UK Showcase on Synthetic Biology for Defence is a bi-annual meeting highlighting researchers and national investment in engineered biology/ synthetic biology. This year the University of Manchester will work with the UK Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) and ONR Global to help facilitate this event. As in years past, the US and UK researchers from academia and industry will join representatives from both governments to discuss this rapidly evolving field of science and its impact on biotechnology and the UK Ministry of Defense and US Department of Defense. With a focus on building collaboration across the research communities, theevent highlights the continued investment and partnership in Synthetic/Engineered Biology and the continued efforts to support mutually beneficial, bi-laterally supported research programs. The 2024 event will be held at the Lowry multi-purpose arts center located in the Greater Manchester area and will run from April 30 # May 2, 2024. This year, ONRG will partner with the University of Manchester to help facilitate the event. The showcase will highlight scientific research in both the US and UK focusing on synthetic/ engineered biology and its application to national defense. Topical sessions will highlight research efforts in sensor development, biomaterial design, biorecovery and supply chain stabilization, and alternative fuels to meet the power and energy requirements of the future. In addition to oral presentations, the meeting venue will accommodate several rooms for poster presentations and social engagement. The meeting agenda will also include #lightning talk# sessions where research teams give a brief overview of their poster and research. The showcase will provide numerous opportunities throughout the 2-day event for networking. This will include an opportunity to visit facilities at the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology, hear about the Advanced Materials Centre and meet with researchers with broad engineering biology expertise at the University of Manchester. Attendees will come from national labs, academia, and industry to discuss their research and build collaboration within this growing community.
