International Workshop On surface Synthesis OSS24

Abstract

#On-Surface Synthesis# (OSS) is a biannual international workshop focused on the synthesis and characterization of atomically precise carbon-based nano-architectures obtained from surface-supported reactions of adequately designed precursors, as well as on the development of potential applications based on these novel materials. This research field is attracting increasing interest as a powerful tool to synthesize novel covalently bonded supramolecular materials from the bottom-up and bridges across the disciplines of chemistry, physics, materials science and engineering. The workshop has its origin in Les Houches (France) in 2014, becoming the first specialized workshop focused on this field. A second edition was held in San Sebastián in 2016, and another two events in 2018 and 2022 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where the latest edition in 2024 will as well take place. The OSS is by now clearly established as thereference meeting of this field and of the greatly growing community of researchers involved. As on-surface synthesis is a highly interdisciplinary field, the aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers working on it from different perspectives: theory and experiment, as well as with chemical, physical and/or application-oriented viewpoints. In doing so, we hope to provide a diverse and stimulating environment to present and discuss the present, past and future of the opportunities opened by this novel and promising synthetic route, as well as to establish successful interdisciplinary collaborations and overall to push forward this research field. The general topics covered in the OSS workshop are the following: The attempts to augment the still scarcely equipped on-surface synthesis toolbox. In this respect, it includes for example new surface-supported reactions run under vacuum conditions, new activation methods for the reactions, or new rational approaches to use specific substrates to steer the reaction paths. Covered topics also include the efforts to increase our understanding of the chemical reaction mechanisms, the synthesis and characterization of newmolecular architectures pre-designed to display particular properties of interest for specific applications, as well as their synthesis on (or transfer onto) insulating substrates. Finally, the workshop also covers functionality tests of such carbon-basedmaterials and their ultimate implementation into devices. The establishment of OSS as the most important on-surface synthesis focused meeting, the transnational scientific board of OSS24 (with representatives from 5 different countries), and the 12 internationally renownedinvited speakers, all together guarantee the potential of this event to bring together a substantial part of the groups globally working in this field, including most of the world-leading experts. Based on the previous events, around 120 researchers from all overthe world are expected to participate in this workshop.
