CSP Organizing The Past Metallurgists Society TPMS lecture series at the University of Cambridge and publish a peer reviewed special issue with Journal of Materials Research regarding the lectures

Abstract

Project SummaryWe often use the sentence #standing on the shoulders of giants# to acknowledge the pioneering contributions of all those who came before us, whose work underpins today#s progress. However, how often do we know who those giants are and what their story is? We have recently founded #The Past Metallurgist Society (TPMS)# to put a face and a name to the giants in metallurgy. On June 24-25, we will gather a diverse cohort of early/mid-career academics from all over the world to honour eminent metallurgists from the past through a lecture series. Each of the 12 speakers will talk about the personal life and scientific accomplishments of a past metallurgist of their choice, highlighting the resonance they have had on the current research landscape. The event will be open, free of charge, to the Cambridge community and beyond through live streaming by Zoom.Technical and Scientific Objectives TPMS aims to inspire researchers and academics across multiple disciplines by sharing the success and#most importantly#unsuccess stories of thegiants that have forged the field of metallurgy. Our speakers will draw parallels to contemporary issues related to impostor syndrome and equity, inclusion, and diversity by detailing the social and historical aspects in the past metallurgists# lives. These aspects transcend the discipline of metallurgy, making our event more inclusive and more appealing to a broader audience compared to a purely technical meeting.Event contribution to US Naval or Marine Corp Science & Technology PlanThis workshop covers innovation in materials science, which aligns with Naval and Marine#s plan of strengthening maritime technological dominance in Materials. Discussions on how past metallurgists addressed contemporary issues can inspire innovative approaches to today s materials science challenges in the naval and marine sectors, such as alloy design, materials under extreme condition and harsh environment, high-throughput characterization, advanced processing and manufacturing, etc. The international nature of the symposium, with experts of different background who are coming from various parts of the globe, supports the Naval and Marine#s objective of enhancing scientific diplomacy. It provides a platform for sharing knowledge and fostering collaboration, which can lead to technological advancements, strengthen international relations, and accelerate the adoption of innovations that may not have been developed within the domestic sphere.Furthermore, in alignment with STEM education and outreach initiatives, the online streaming participation makes the workshop accessible for future and current Naval STEM workforce as an educational resource. Our speakers with diverse background, as well as the past metallurgists in the stories, can inspire the younger generations and cultivate a diverse and well-trained talent pool for the Navy andMarine Corps for the future. Guest speakers and program qualityWe feature 12 (5 female and 7 male) guest speakers from the UK, USA,South America, and Europe. All our speakers are self-funded and have confirmed in-person attendance to TPMS meeting. We have selected these early- to mid-career academics based on their ground-breaking contributions to the field of metallurgy as well as to their excellent presentation skills and passion for outreach. We are excited to have succeeded in representing the diversity of the globalresearch community through this cohort of speakers with different gender, ethnicity, and cultural background. Desired Outcome The Journal of Materials Research (JMR) will publish a special issue after the TPMS meeting. All manuscripts submitted to this special issue will be peer-reviewed. We aim to publish this special issue with open access. It is also our intention to make this lecture series a recurring event.
