CSP: Australian Space Research Conference 2024
Abstract
This proposal is to provide support for the 22nd Australian Space Research Conference (ASRC) whichwill be held on Whadjuk-Noongar country at Curtin University#s Bentley Campus, Perth, Australia, from2-5 September 2024, with outreach and workshop activities on 1 and 6 September. This will be the 16thASRC jointly sponsored and organised by the Australian Academy of Science#s National Committee forSpace and Radio Science (NCSRS) and the National Space Society of Australia (NSSA), with the supportof the Mars Society of Australia (MSA). Our website is https://asrc2024.au/The ASRC is the primary annual meeting for Australian space research. It welcomes researchers, engineers, educators, business and policy, students and other workers from across the university, industryand government parts of the space sector. The conference is not limited to Australian-based research.Australia faces challenges in meeting the workforce skills needs for the space sector. This is the premiermeeting for space researchers (science, engineering, technologists, practitioners) in Australia. As such itis very important for fostering and maintaining the growth and future of the Australian space sectorbyproviding a forum for information exchange, community networking, and student pathways. It is also animportant mechanism for retaining active researchers in this field within Australia. The ASRC has a strong commitment to equity and diversity and particularly encourages sponsorship andsupport which can help grow the skills base. The proposal is for ONR-Global to support the ASRC to help keep the registration fees down to areasonable level. In 2022 the daily cost per registrant was about $AUD300. The student registration fee at$AUD135 was heavily subsidised by the other registrants. This is in line with the ethos of the conferenceto foster students in space research. Financial support from ONRG in the form of a grant will ensure thatregistration fees are maintained at affordable levels and the conference can proceed and be a success. An ONRG grant will be used to cover the fixed expenses of Audio/visual equipment hire from the venueincluding microphones, laptops and projectors, venue hall hire fees, and aiding in deferring costs forspecial invited speakers. We also ask for travel and accommodation support to allow organisingcommittee members to attend the conference who otherwise could not afford to attend.
