Workshop for Capacity Development in the Gulf of Guinea

Abstract

We propose to hold a planning meeting to bring together 20 people who are motivated to undertake an ambitious scientific capacity development effort in the Gulf of Guinea region. We propose to hold the meeting in Accra, Ghana. This effort is focused on going on bi-annual sampling missions along lagoons, estuaries and coastal zones with already available resources in Cote d#Ivoire, Ghana and Nigeria. Each exercise will entrain a cohort of young scientists and researchers in the art and science of sampling, analysis and data gathering. To plan for this ambitious range of field experimentation, we had a successful kick-off virtual meeting in December 2023, and are planning for an in-person 3-day workshop to determine the range of inter-disciplinary scientific and technical activities, logistics and locations and ultimately what kinds of outreach to local stakeholders in each region will be needed. The outcome of this meeting will be to solidify the wide range of science to be done, the technology requirements to enable it and the roles/responsibilities of the participants in each of the field deployments. We hope this effort will ultimately have societal and scientific impact in advancing ocean science in under-represented and poorly sampled regions like the Gulf of Guinea.
