The 11th International Congress on Biocatalysis
Abstract
The fight against climate change and the transition to a sustainable bio-based circular economy requires cutting edge technologies that ensure economic growth with environmentally responsible action. This transition will only be feasible when the opportunities ofbiotechnology are exploited. In addition, the challenges that our society is facing nowadays (climate change, growing population, limited resources, energy supply, nutrition, health and mobility, etc.) can only be met in an interdisciplinary manner through the efficient use of our natural resources.Biocatalysts offer huge potential to master the future challenges of our planet. It is a multidisciplinary topic based on the edge of various disciplines including biology, chemistry, environmental sciences, engineering and logistics. The #11th International Congress on Biocatalysis (biocat2024)# is part of a biennial conference series, which was established in 2002. The congress series has covered the most exciting aspects and thelatest developments in biocatalysis, including enzyme discovery, evolution, application, bioprocess engineering, systems biology, biorefinery and bioeconomy. Advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence or smart reactors and their role on biocatalysis will also be covered in biocat2024.The Biocat congress provides an overview of the latest advances in biocatalysis and biotransformations by integrating the know-how of experts and early-career researchers from academia and industry including biologists, biochemists, chemists and engineers. During the congress, the following topics will be covered:#AI and computational methods#Structure function analysis and enzyme engineering#Enzymatic and whole-cellbiotransformations#Reaction cascades: Electro-, chemo-, and photoenzymatic synergies#Bioprocess engineering, design of smart reactors#Facing Climate Change: Sustainability and circular bioeconomyBiocat 2024 will therefore serve as a platform to meet experts from these areas, exchange ideas and form new strategic alliances for future projects and innovations, also strengthening the bridge between academia and industry. The program will include plenary lectures and oral sessions of well-established scientists as well as oral presentations and short lightning talks of early-career researchers, serving as an opportunity for young researchers to enter the international scientific atmosphere. High-quality abstracts will be selected to be presented as posters. By offering 15 travel grants to young researchers from various disciplines and countries we will stimulate exchange of ideas and know-how in an open atmosphere. The scientific areas will include AI and computational methods, enzyme engineering, biotransformations, reaction cascades, bioprocess engineering and bioeconomy. The meeting will provide young researchers a forum for debate and discussion and the opportunity to build a network between different groups worldwide. A wide range of important fundamentalissues that are crucial for the developmentof innovative and sustainable technologies, especially modern biotechnology, will be discussed. We are convinced that this initiative will further support collaboration of the young researchers from different disciplines in the future and help them to gain novel insights into modern topics and techniques in the field of the rapidly growing field of biotechnology. In the long run this will contribute to solving the global challenges that our society is facing such as climate change, growing population, limited resources, energy supply, etc.
