12th International Conference of the African Materials Research Society (AMRS2024)

Abstract

AbstractTechnical and Scientific ObjectivesAdvances in materials have long fueled technological advances in a broad range of engineering fields, from communications to construction, from medicine to metallurgical processing. AMRS2024 provides an affordable platform for African researchers to present their work across the broad spectrum of activities encompassed by materials science and engineering. By bringing together top materials researchers from Africa, the US, and other parts of the world, AMRS2024 will advance materials research across a broad spectrum of topics, which are relevant not only to Africa but to the world as a whole for years to come. Based on historical trends, ~500 participants are anticipated to attend AMRS2024, with ~400 coming from African institutions. 11 symposia are planned, spanning from materials for health to advanced materials. Additionally, nine preconference workshops are planned covering topics in biosensors, nanofabrication, energy materials, entrepreneurship, and professional career development. During the preconference workshops, students will be equipped with both theoretical and experimental skills by experts in the respective fields.Relevance to US Naval Science and Technology PlanThrough AMRS2024 the Navy stands to identify top talent from all over the world to tackle scientific challenges of national strategic importance, with advances in materials enabling advances in a myriad of technologies. In particular, AMRS symposia and preconference workshops align with Navy framework priority areas of Operational Endurance (power generation, storage, energy efficiency), Environmental Quality program: Water treatment/reduction and analysis (desalination, ultrafiltration, wastewater treatment), Nanoengineered Materials (Inorganic-organic hybrid nanomaterials, graphene-based materials),Biotechnology for naval applications (Biosensors, Biomaterials).Desired/Anticipated Outcomes1.Papers presented at AMRS2024 are invited for publication in MRS Advances.2.Beyond publications, it is anticipated that new collaborations will be formed, and existing collaborations strengthened at the conference.3.Collaboration for initial discussions and development of a regional Materials Characterization Laboratory for Africa
