Detection, localization and identification of underwater sources of sound usingDistributed Acoustic Sensing data from undersea fiber-optic cables

Abstract

The major objective of the proposed project is to develop and test signal and array processing methods applied specifically to Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data acquired from undersea fiber-optic cables. The aim is to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio and provide longer detection ranges and better localization accuracy of underwater sound sources. This will also allow more reliable identification of sound sources. The maximum possible frequency range of sounds and localization errors will also be assessed for sound sources of different origin, such as great whales, ships of different types and underwater earthquakes. The proposed project will beconducted by researchers from the Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST) and the Centre for Exploration Geophysics (CEG) of Curtin University in Australia.
