Dynamic Coasts: Freshwater inputs, sediments, and internal waves

Abstract

This proposal aims to hold a collaborative workshop and related field observations to investigate the physical processes that shapethe coastal environment in Patagonia and similar regions worldwide. Researchers from the U.S. and Chile will work together to studyhow glacial-fed rivers interact with fjords, examining processes such as turbulent mixing, internal wave generation, and sediment transport. The fieldwork and discussions will help to improve models of coastal hydrodynamics, which are essential for accurate predictions of conditions that can affect navigation, infrastructure, and other coastal naval operations. We will focus on advancing the understanding of coastal processes, including internal waves and thermal structures. The workshop will foster international collaboration, provide valuable data on previously unexplored regions, and contribute to the development of forecasting tools for coastal environments.
