Forced convection in PIN-PMN-PT crystal growth using full furnace motion

Abstract

This project will use a newly developed crystal growth furnace technology to introduce novel mixing methods to the melt during crystal growth of compositions of Pb(In1/2Nb1/2)O3- Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT). The approach proposed has not previously been feasible due to the scale and complexity of typical crystal growth furnaces, making this study completely novel. It is hypothesized that this approach will offer a means for improved compositional homogeneity and dopant uniformity within grown crystals, as wellas reduce growth times. Such outcomes could dramatically reduce the costs of these materials which are critical for future naval sonar systems. The proposal covers the development of novel motion pathways through computational fluid dynamics studies and then the development of an experimental setup to test and qualify the modelling work.
