Ctenophore Adhesive

Abstract

The scope of this effort is the development of an underwater synthetic adhesive like that found in ctenophores. The Grantee plans to isolate the adhesive-producing colloblasts cells from ctenophores and then sequence them for later expression in Escherichia coli (E. coli). The Grantee has identified multiple purification techniques that will reduce risk and expedite the overall project. After successful protein expression and purification, the Grantee will characterize the underwater performance of the developed adhesive(s) in the laboratory. The underwater laboratory testing will ensure a realistic underwater adhesive performance is evaluated and will aid in future DoD transition.
