Nuclear & Radiological Effects
Abstract
The Nuclear and Radiological Effects project develops nuclear and radiological assessment modeling tools to support military operational planning, weapon effects predictions, and strategic system design decisions; consolidate validated Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) modeling tools into the Joint Information Environment for integrated functionality; predict system response to nuclear and radiological weapons producing electromagnetic, thermal, blast, shock and radiation environments - key systems include Nuclear Command and Control System, Global Information Grid, space assets, structures, humans and environment; provide detailed adversary nuclear infrastructure characterization to enhance counterforce operations and hazard effects; conduct analyses in support of nuclear and radiological science and technology and address the priority needs of the Combatant Commands and the Department of Defense (DoD); and develop foreign nuclear weapon outputs. The increase from FY 2014 to FY 2015 is due to the net effect of the cancellation of the Experimental Situational Awareness Center, a shift in priorities from weapon effects modeling to electromagnetic pulse modeling, and increased investment in full effects modeling. The decrease from FY 2015 to FY 2016 is due to an administrative realignment of the System Vulnerability and Assessment program to Project RI-Nuclear Survivability due to the nature of that effort.
