SCI BS/SYSTEM BIOLOGY AND NETWORK SCIENCE

Abstract

This project funds research to conduct studies through a modernized systematic approach that uses iterative computer simulation with mathematical modeling and biological information to analyze and refine biological studies. The information gained from these studies provides a better understanding of the overall biological system and its molecular network of interactions, which leads to improved early strategic decision-making in the development of preventive and treatment solutions to diseases. This approach establishes a model for application of systems biology processes and knowledge of biological networks to discover medical products that prevent and/or treat diseases or medical conditions. This more complex, yet integrated approach, to studying biological systems could potentially reduce both the time and expense of medical product development for the Army. Funding for this research is in project S15 prior to FY10. The cited work is consistent with the Director, Defense Research and Engineering Strategic Plan, the Army Modernization Strategy, and the Army Science and Technology Master Plan. Work in this project is performed by the US Army Medical Research and Material Command (USAMRMC), Fort Detrick, MD.
