Developing Novel Analgesics for Treating Burn Pain

Abstract

Despite many medical advances, it is quite challenging to treat the burn patient both on the battlefield as well as in non-deployed settings. We have developed a new hypothesis of post-burn pain being due to the release of "endo-capsaicins," endogenous lipids that activate the capsaicin receptor (also known as "TRPV1"). Further, we have shown that drugs that block the enzymes that make the endo-capsaicins produce significant pain relief in animal models of post-burn pain. In this application, we propose to screen libraries of drugs to find better and safer medicines for treating post-burn pain.
