Prostate Cancer Research Training Program
Abstract
The Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Undergraduate Collaborative Summer Training Program (STP) described in this application will enable us to continue a summer program that began in 2006. The goal of this and the previous applications is to develop a summer research training experience for students from underrepresented minority populations. We propose that the members of the Prostate Cancer Research Group at the University of Iowa (UI) partner with Lincoln University, a HBCU institution. Undergraduate students from Lincoln University will be recruited by the cooperative interaction of the Principal Investigator, David M. Lubaroff, PhD (Iowa), the Faculty Advisor at UI, Paul Heidger, PhD, and the Faculty Advisors, Derrick Swinton, PhD and Karen Baskerville, PhD. Following an application to the program, students from Lincoln University, supported by this grant, will be chosen to participate in the summer program. Eleven faculty from UI have been chosen as mentors for the summer students, based on their research experience in prostate cancer and their experience in training undergraduate students. Information about the research in each of the mentor s laboratory will be sent to the students accepted into the program in order to allow them to choose the area of research that interests them the most. The HBCU SRT program will also interact with other programs at UI that are designed to train minority student populations. These include the CIC Iowa Summer Research Opportunities Program, and the Iowa Biosciences Advantage Program. Joint activities, both scientific and social, are planned to foster the interactions. A formal course in prostate cancer will be offered to the students as well as their participation in multiple lab meetings, journal clubs, forums, and seminars. They will also have ample opportunities to present their research results during and at the end of the summer session. Career counseling and after summer session follow-up will be carried out in cooperation with the Faculty Advisor at Lincoln University. With this program, we plan to increase the number of minorities that enter post-graduate schools (graduate or medical) with the goal of entering the field of prostate cancer research.
