Persistent Hormonal Changes in Veterans with Gulf War Illness

Abstract

This study will examine differences in serum hormone levels between Veterans with Gulf War Illness and Veterans who were deployed to the Gul War but did not develop the illness. We will also examine if these hormonal changes are responsible, at least in part, of the most frequent symptoms of Gulf War Illness such as severe fatigue, chronic pain, and memory problems. Many Gulf War Veterans have been ill for more than 24 years, with few treatment options that would provide substantial relief for this disabling condition. Discovering hormonal alterations in Veterans with Gulf War Illness will increase our knowledge of the causes of the disease and may identify subgroups of Gulf War Illness patients with particular hormonal changes. The project has major therapeutic implications because hormonal disorders can be effectively treated by safe medications that are ready available at the present time. Treatment, in turn, may result in a significant reduction of our Veterans? suffering, maximizing their functional recovery and quality of life.
