Investigating striatal attentional circuits to understand and mitigate deficits in cognitive flexibility due to sleep loss
Abstract
Sleep loss produces substantial deficits in cognitive and behavioral functioning. These deficits often produce problems in meeting the demands of daily life, but can also contribute to catastrophic errors in a variety of work settings. Sleep loss creates specific problems for cognitive flexibility, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances and environmental events. The current research will use animal studies to identify brain areas and neurotransmitter systems that are compromised as a result of sleep loss and that lead to problems in cognitive flexibility. In addition, we will apply the findings from the animal studies to better understand individual differences in resilience to sleep loss in people and to better explain the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of drugs used to counter the effects of sleep loss on cognition.
