Gender differences in complement-mediated reperfusion injury.

Abstract

After an injury, the immune system is activated to protect the body but this immune response also causes additional damage. Intestinal trauma triggers an excessive immune response, which may cause death even if the initial wound is survived. Although woman make up approximately 10 percent of deployed Service members, their rate of death from an excessive immune response is significantly higher than in males. This study will attempt to determine why females are more susceptible to an excessive immune response after vascular trauma. We will compare the molecules that contribute to the excessive response in male and female mice. This proposal will guide our development of new treatments for trauma in females and enhance treatments for male Service members as well.
