An Evidence-Based Approach to Optimizing Selection of Below-the-Knee Prosthetic Prescription
Abstract
Objectives and Rationale. Our ultimate goal is to develop a tool that can be used to help clinicians better select a prosthesis for people with amputations below the knee. Currently, there is not a specific set of rules or guidelines that are used in the clinic, and clinicans are faced with several numerous choices to prescribe a device. Often times, selection is based off of previous success rather than a measurement. Applicability and Impact. This work would be impactful because it would establish not only guidelines, but a simplified, calculated way to determine what type of device may be best for an individual with an amputation. Patients. The proposal would target patients with lower extremity amputations. Potential Clinical Applications, Benefits, and Risks. The results of this proposal would be applied clinically, and would allow clinicians to quickly select the best prosthetic. This not only speeds up the initial device selection process but it also improves the quality of maintaining health, wellness and quality of life. These results would also simplify the process for the clinician allowing more time for proper fitting, alignment and patient care. Ultimately, the results could likely lead to increased physical activity, mental health, and overall wellness. Projected Timeline to Achieve Outcome. We anticipate that the development of the initial tool will take up to 24 months. Benefit to Service Members, Veterans and/or Family Members. The results of this research would ensure proper care to Service Members, Veterans, and/or family members. The patients will have an improvement in current standard of care. This improvement in care will result in reduced time to ideal prosthetic fitting, a more rapid return to full function, reduced discomfort, reduced orthopedic complications, improved function, increased activity level resulting in improved overall health, and improved quality of life.
