Novel Thermostable Gastric-Resistant Lipid-Encapsulated Insulin Oral Tablet for the Management of Diabetes

Abstract

The goal of this project is to develop a novel heat-stable, gastric-resistant, oral tablet containing insulin in a convenient, easy-to-use presentation by military personnel or Veterans for management of diabetes in any setting, including areas of potential conflict where cold storage may be limited or unavailable. The proposed research aims to develop this innovative formulation by complexing insulin with bile salts, which are resistant to degradation in stomach, thereby protecting insulin via the oral route. Furthermore, the bile salts help in penetrating the intestinal epithelium, thus helping in absorption of insulin. The oral delivery of the gastric-resistant tablet is convenient and self-reliant, avoiding painful injections and thus improving patient compliance in diabetes management and care.
