MRI Predictors of Outcome After Radiotherapy for Localized Prostate Cancer
Abstract
This proposal will analyze MRI scans that are now being collected from patients with localized prostate cancer who are participating in a large randomized trial that compares two different radiation therapy techniques. These MRI scans are acquired before radiation treatment as part of the patient’s standard of care. Experts will centrally review all of the images and given them a cancer score. We will then use computer methods to generate individual maps of cancer probability and extract information that is not necessarily visible to the human eye. These data will then be compared to patient outcomes after treatment (prostate-specific antigen and cancer control) to discover whether any of the MRI information could have predicted whether the cancer of an individual patient was destined to recur. In this way, future patients can better tailor their treatment decisions based on their MRI scan before treatment. We will also obtain MRI scans 2 years after radiation treatment in a subset of these patients. We believe that MRI at 2 years may be a good way to measure whether radiation treatment was effective, but this is not routinely done. We will analyze the 2-year scans in the same way as scans before treatment and determine whether they may be useful also.
