The Ovarian Cancer Academy 2020-2025: A Data-Driven Learning Community
Abstract
The Department of Defense (DoD)-sponsored Ovarian Cancer Academy (OCA) originated in 2010 with support from the DoD Ovarian Cancer Research Program. Since that time, it has developed into a pre-eminent training program to support early-career scientists who have committed their careers to the study of ovarian cancer. The OCA Leadership Award supports protected time for a Dean and an Assistant Dean that is used to coordinate scientific and leadership development training for early-career investigators, their designated mentors, and consumer advocates. This program is innovative in many ways. For one, the participants in this program form a virtual learning community. They meet at least once a month, using online methods, and also come together annually to present their findings at annual ovarian cancer research symposia. During these meetings, they learn best practices in academic medicine, improve their leadership skills, and gain depth in their understanding of ovarian cancer. By training together, these scientists form a “community of practice” where their collective learning becomes a bond among them, resulting in a synergy in their work, whether working together or separately, to have the greatest impact possible on the lives of ovarian cancer patients and their families.
