Development of Antiviral Therapies Against Nipah and Hendra Viruses

Abstract

The henipaviruses Nipah virus (NiV) and Hendra virus (HeV) are emerging threats in Asia-Pacific region. NiV and HeV are some of the deadliest pathogens known to humanity with mortality rates up to 75%, and are causing more frequent outbreaks of disease. The current standard of care after infection is supportive care, and no U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved therapeutics are available. We need to develop an approach to efficiently identify novel drugs to be further developed into effective interventions. This work will develop machine-learning capabilities for design of new NiV and HeV antiviral small-molecules.
