Mechanisms of Uveal Melanoma Sensitivity to Velcrin Treatment
Abstract
There are no good treatments available for patients with metastatic uveal melanoma. We have discovered a new way to kill cancer cells that is unrelated to any approach currently being studied, but we don’t know whether this new method, involving treatment with compounds called velcrins, will work in uveal melanoma. We therefore propose to test whether velcrins have an anti-cancer effect in uveal melanoma, and if so, whether these compounds work by the expected mechanism. One velcrin compound, called BAY 2666605, is already in phase 1 clinical trials. If our research is successful, we will find out whether BAY 2666605 should also be tested in uveal melanoma patients. The potential benefits of our research would therefore be development of a therapy that benefits uveal melanoma patients. However, the risks are not yet clear, as safety is being evaluated as part of the phase 1 clinical trial.
