MANAGEMENT SPECIES, EAGLES / BIRD RISK JOINT BASE ELMENDORF RICHARDSON

Abstract

Bald and Golden Eagles are protected under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, (Title 16 of the United States Code, Sections 668-668d). Large bodied birds, particularly flocking or soaring birds pose a serious airfield risk. Documenting their JBER distribution, population levels, and fledgling success is necessary to support future airfield and mapping actions and adhere to regulatory guidance requirements. Starting in 2011, annual Bald Eagle surveys conducted with fixed-wing aircraft were initiated to identify all active nest locations on and immediately adjacent to JBER. This scientifically-sound inventory and monitoring is needed to gather accurate population and habitat information to serve as the foundation for effective natural resource management. Accurate population and habitat information is needed to foster the exchange of information with other resource management agencies, minimize military impacts, and support species sustainability.
