Wetland Monitoring Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER), Alaska

Abstract

These efforts are intended to focus on study and assessment of wetlands and floodplains in the Ship Creek Watershed, where it occurs within the installation boundary of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. This project will assess the current condition and functional values of floodplain wetlands associated with Ship Creek as well as other wetlands within the Ship Creek Watershed by applying the Anchorage Wetland Functional Assessment Methodology Adaptation for use on JBER and conducting site visits to verify tabletop assessments and improve mapping resources. This product will further enhance existing GIS resources and will aid resource planners and engineers in monitoring wetland functions and values in this hazard prone watershed for the purpose of developing and implementing hazard mitigation strategies to reduce impacts in flood prone areas of the watershed. Assessment and monitoring information gained through this project is also critical to supporting planning and execution of projects which may require authorization for unavoidable impacts to wetlands.
