PERMAFROST TUNNEL REPAIR AND EXPANSION
Abstract
The objective of this scope of work is to implement the INRMP to provide healthy and resilient environments that are sustainable high quality settings for military training and research to protect and enhance biological diversity and ecological health on all Department of Defense (DoD) lands, and to ensure compliance with all environmental laws and regulations. Specific objective of the proposed effort is to develop a safe and efficient 3 dimensional permafrost test bed to advance understanding and capabilities in the detection of ground ice content and to forecast ground state conditions. Specific tasks include: 1) replacing the old tunnel (tunnel 1) portal structure and completing the extension of the forward cross tunnel (cross tunnel A) from the new tunnel adit (tunnel 2) to the original tunnel adit (Tunnel 1), (2) modernizing the electric distribution to the site, (3) redesigning the refrigeration system, and (4) purchasing geophysical and geotechnical equipment necessary to support continued tunnel excavation.
