JBER ALPINE BIODIVERSITY TRAINING SUPPORT

Abstract

Major requirements to be executed for this project include provision of technical staff and equipment resources necessary to support Federal Biological Scientists in accomplishing the following tasks, within the period of performance: Task 1: Characterize and update descriptions of vegetative assemblages common along representative transects across elevational gradients including low, mid, and high alpine, and subalpine ranges throughout Training Areas occurring in Snowhawk and Chester Creek watersheds using GIS (tabletop) analysis and field assessments conducted during the growing season. Use field data gathered to develop aerial signature map book reference for use in improving of Land Cover and Vegetation mapping; Task 2: Identify, characterize, delineate where practicable, and functionally assess wetlands occurring in depressions, swales, and slope drainages within Snowhawk and Upper Chester Creek watersheds; Task 3: Provide equipment to establish monitoring stations and initiate characterization of hydrologic and biological features occurring in three to five reaches within the firstorder headwaters of Snowhawk Creek (North and South Forks) and Chester Creek; Task 4: Identify and map, in GIS, potential habitat locations, conduct field investigations, and establish monitoring stations using digital remote cameras to characterize and quantify occupancy of collared pika in JBER’s alpine training areas; Task 5: Document, using high resolution digital photography, other wildlife use of alpine training areas through field observations coordinated with field efforts related to Tasks 1 through 4. Task 6: Compile available studies pertinent to alpine vegetation and wildlife ecology, relevant to Tasks 1 through 5 and assist in analyzing trends in ecological change over time, comparable to historic studies conducted on JBER.
