Hazardous Management Program (Toxics) Support-Kadena AB

Abstract

The primary objectives of this study is to assist Kadena Air Base (KAB) with the optimal management of its toxics program to eliminate/minimize any direct or indirect impacts to its natural resources from potential soil/water contamination and to ensure compliance with all environmental laws and regulations. Asbestos has been identified as damaging to wildlife through inhalation/ingestion and fish through water sources (US Fish and Wildlife Ecological Services) and lead poisoning in wildlife. Polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) has toxicological effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms due to chemical exposure. Specific objectives are as follows: (1) Perform data analysis, provide recommendations and implementation for an effective toxics program. (2) To contribute to making the most sound, balanced decisions possible to protect the natural resources from exposure and/or impacts from these contaminants.
