Identifying & Enabling Multidisciplinary Res. on Collaborative Interactions and Teams: A Measurement Perspective

Abstract

The rapidly growing literature on teamwork and collaborative problem solving suggests that these skills are becoming increasingly more important to todayÕs organizations. However, the significant developments in these domains are occurring across different communities and as a result are largely independent of one another. Educational Testing Service (ETS) proposes a research project to identify experts from these independent fields, and furthermore to enable interdisciplinary research among these experts. We plan to bring together researchers in organizational teaming, educational collaboration, tutoring, simulation, and gaming as well as those involved in statistical and psychometric process modeling. This project seeks to channel this expertise towards advances in the measurement of cognitive and non-cognitive skills of individuals and teams. This proposed project consists of four interrelated components. With a series of research questions related to the assessment of individuals and teams, firstly, an expanded literature review will be conducted to identify related studies and scholars in different research fields, such as education, psychology, and statistics to name but a few. Based on the expanded literature review, a list of related field experts will be generated. As the second component, we will provide platforms to enable the conversation across fields and interdisciplinary collaboration. A two-day intensive working meeting dedicated to the topic of collaborative interactions and teams brings together identified experts from the above fields. During the meeting, plenty of opportunities and activities will be arranged to encourage the exchange of ideas and progress in different fields, as well as discussions of collaborative opportunities. In order to maximize the impact of the meeting and disseminate the ideas to a broader audience, the third component proposes to develop and maintain a webpage that is publicly available and hosts videos and slides from discussions, as well as information collected from the expanded literature review. This component provides an opportunity for the practitioners and the general research community to get familiar with the latest progress on collaborative interactions and teams in various research fields. The last component serves as a deliverable in the form of an edited volume based on the meeting discussions. The book will potentially include studies and authors identified in the discussions in addition to the meetingÕs participants, and enable the impact of this project to reach an even broader audience.
