Mathematical Modeling for the Synthesis of Thermosetting Polymers Based on Furan and Epoxi Resins
Abstract
The project proposes developments on mathematical modeling of the syntheses and curing of furan and epoxy resins. The models consider the complex kinetics and transport phenomena along the processes and involve novel mathematical techniques. Mathematical models are used to understand the physical chemistry of the processes, to determine characteristics and variables related to the polymerization and curing, to simulate and optimize the processes, to predict the physical and molecular characteristics of the products, and to complement characterization techniques. The models are applied to study the effect of monomers, catalysts, initiators, and other experimental conditions on the performance of the reactors and processes, and on the characteristics of the final products. The main gold is to use the model for the determination of experimental conditions in order to produce materials with pre-specified characteristics. The study is mainly theoretical. Available and/or new experimental data are used to adjust and to validate the models.
