2014 Salish Kootenai College Equipment Grant
Abstract
The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year (FY) 2014 and the Department of Defense (DoD) Appropriations Act for 2014 allocated $ 10.7M to assist Hi stori cally Black Colleges and Universities and Minority-Serving Insti tutions (HBCU/MI) and to enhance their research and education capabilities in scientific areas relevant to the defense mission. The FY 2014 program supports the acquisition of research equipment and instrumentation to augment existing capabilities and to develop new capabilities that will facilitate greater participation in DoD research programs and encourage more students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. This proposal from Principal Investigator, Dr. Chri stina Rush, requests funding for the acquisition of the AKTA pure L protein purification system with Unicorn software to initiate and support ongoing proteomics research at Salish Kootenai College (SKC). SKC has been a recipient of Instrumentation awards in the past and have put the funds to very effective use. The proposed instrument facilitates increased processing speed for greater protein purification yield which is required for the higher throughput sought to increase capability for training students in class and in laboratory internships. The proposed equipment can provide research opportunities that mi ght be attractive to local Native American high school students and undergraduates.
