Tunable Nanostructures with Dynamic Optical Properties

Abstract

The objective of this proposal is to create a new class of tunable nanostrucrured materials with dynamic optical properties that can be readily integrated. Using a hierarchical approach. the PI proposed to create nanostructures based on embedding magnetic nanomaterials internally in high aspect-ratio polymer structures. Using external magnetic fields, the particles can be magnetized to overcome the elastic mechanical energy and actively direct the angular alignment of the larger nanostructures. He proposes that this mechanism can result in three surface structure states, namely (i) randomly, (ii) vertically, and (iii) obliqudy aligned nanostructures allowing tunable optical properties.
